Fire at the Fair!

April 18th, 2014 9:23 AM by Janet and Michael Nelson

As most of my friends know, the Washington State Fair experienced a fire in the Evergreen Hall building early Monday morning this week.   This devastating news concluded a great Spring Fair weekend which saw the largest crowds in the 25 year history of the event.

Evergreen Hall has more than 90 years of history on the Fair, hosting a variety programs over the years.  Most recently, the Agriculture and Floral displays after a 2013 remodel of the building. The building is likely a total loss.  As was reported in the news, one piglet was lost in the fire, while 49 other farm animals were saved by Fire Personnel and our dedicated Fair Staff.

Also lost in the fire, the Sales Family flagship food booth was badly damaged in the fire.  The Sales Family has been an anchor at the Fair for a long time, offering their Fair Classic “Krusty Pups” along with serving the original Fair Burger.  One of the iconic locations of the Fair, the Sales Family counter had the wobbly stools to sit and enjoy a made-to-order breakfast, an onion burger, or just a cup of coffee as you people watched!    Many a Fairgoer have sat on those stools over the history of the Fair.

It’s too early to tell still how the building will be rebuilt and when. But we all know the fire will not detour us from having a fantastic 2014 Washington State Fair in September!

Have a great Easter Weekend!
