Happy Cinco de Mayo! What is the Celebration?

May 5th, 2014 10:49 AM by Janet and Michael Nelson

Welcome to May 5th or more commonly known as Cinco de Mayo in the United States.  But do you know why we celebrate this date? Some have told me in the past, Cinco de Mayo was the celebration of the Mexican Independence Day.  But that is not true.  Mexican Independence Day is actually September 16th.

Cinco de Mayo originated in the Mexican-American communities in the American West as a way to commemorate the cause and freedom of democracy during the first years of the American Civil War.  Today, the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

Pretty simple!  We celebrate today the Mexican heritage living amongst us in the United States.  The Mexican heritage has brought many great things to our culture and lifestyle!  We thank them today by celebrating Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
